The RFQ template that makes quotes comparable.

The most common reason three quotes are unusable is that they priced three different jobs. Copy this, fill the brackets, send it to whoever you like — us included or not.

Documentation required: WPS, PQR, welder certificates, weld map
Preheat logs required: [ yes / no ]

5. NDT (specify by joint on the drawing, not as a blanket statement)
   All welds: VT 100%

   Full-pen, compression only: [ UT 10%, escalating ]
Fillets in fatigue joints: [ MT 100% of toes ]
   Repair welds: [ MT + original method, 100% ]
Escalation rule: if any tested joint is rejected, testing extends to
100% of that welder's work on that joint category.
Technician qualification: [ ISO 9712 or ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level II min ]

6. STRESS RELIEF

Notes

Four fields that carry most of the price

Section 5, NDT

“100% UT on all welds” is the single most expensive sentence a buyer writes. Mark the joints on the drawing instead.Which method finds what.

Section 7, flatness or coplanarity

Four individually flat pads can sit on four different planes and still pass. If you need one plane, say coplanarity. Why it costs differently.

Section 11, Incoterm

Fix it before you ask for prices, not after. An EXW quote and an FOB quote are not comparable numbers.EXW, FOB and CIF compared.

Section 2, packed envelope

Including cradle and lugs, because that is what the carrier measures. Check it against theshipping envelope checkerbefore you freeze the geometry.

Use it freely, modify it, put your own logo on it. Attribution is appreciated and never required — see oureditorial standards.

Filled it in and want it priced?

Send the completed template with your drawing. Because the scope is already unambiguous, the quote comes back faster and the number means something.
